Professor K.W. Neale

Professor Neale was born and educated in Canada.  He obtained his B.Eng. degree from McGillUniversity in 1966, followed by M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He joined the University of Sherbrooke (Sherbrooke, Quebec) in 1970 where he is currently Canada Senior Research Chair in Advanced Engineered Material Systems. He has also held academic positions at the University of Alberta, HarvardUniversity, McGillUniversity and the Delft University of Technology in Holland. His research interests include solid mechanics, materials and structures, and the use of fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) for civil engineering applications.  He has published over 300 technical papers in these areas. Professor Neale is active in numerous technical societies and code committees. He has participated in the organization of various international conferences, and serves on the editorial boards of a number of technical journals.  He is currently Vice President and a Theme Director of the ISIS Canada Network of Centres of Excellence, responsible for the theme FRPs and Integrated Sensing for Structural Rehabilitation. Professor Neale is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.

   

Professor G.M. Van Erp

Professor Van Erp is the Executive Director of FCDD, a Centre of Excellence in Engineered Fibre Composites at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba, Queensland Australia. He has been involved in fibre composites research, development and design for more than ten years. During this time he has developed a range of innovative fibre composite structures for use in civil engineering, including Australiaˇ¦s first fibre composite road bridge and a range of structural components for Brisbaneˇ¦s floating riverwalk. In 2002 he was awarded the IEAust Queensland Professional Engineer of the Year award and in 2004 Gerard received the pre-eminent National ATSE Clunies Ross Award for an ˇ§outstanding contribution to science and its application for the economic, social and environmental benefit of Australiaˇ¨. Gerard has published more than 90 papers and supervised 7 PhD students in the area of fibre composites. In March 2002, the QLD State Government announced a $7.5 million capital advance from its Smart State Research Facilities Fund, to establish a World Class Centre of Excellence in Fibre Composites in Toowoomba at USQ. This support is recognition for the Centre's ground braking work in civil engineering composites.

   

Dr. Hiroshi Fukuyama

Dr. Fukuyama is a Chief Research Engineer and Research Coordinator of Building Research Institute, Japan. He received his B. Eng, M. Eng and D. Eng from the Tokyo University of Science in 1985, 1987 and 1990, respectively. Dr. Fukuyama has been working at BRI from 1990 for development and maintenance of Japanese building codes and related guidelines. He has also conducted many national and international research projects, and international technical cooperation and training on earthquake engineering. His research interests include use of advanced materials such as FRP and FRC for concrete structures, seismic resistant design of reinforced concrete structures and hybrid structures, and performance-based design methodology. He has been working as a member or a chairman of many research committees on concrete engineering in fib, RILEM, JCI (Japan Concrete Institute), AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan) and JAEE (Japan Association for Earthquake Engineering).

   

Professor Sami H. Rizkalla

Professor Rizkalla received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from North Carolina State University. He is currently a Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering and Construction and the Director of the Constructed Facilities Laboratory at North Carolina State University. He is an elected Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI); Fellow, American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE); Fellow, Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE); Fellow, The Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC); Fellow, International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC). He is currently Director of the NSF I/UCRC-Repair of Buildings and Bridges with Composites at North Carolina State University. He is the immediate past Chair of ACI Committee 440 "FRP Reinforcements"; Immediate past President and Scientific Director of the Canadian Networks of Center of Excellence on Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures; Regional Editor, Elsevier Science ˇ§Construction and Building Materialsˇ¨ Journal; Member, Editorial Board, ASCE "Composite for Construction" Journal; Member, Advisory Board, Journal of Advanced Concrete Technology, Japan.

   

Professor T. Triantafillou

Professor Triantafillou is Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Structural Materials Laboratory at the University of Patras, Greece. He received the Diploma in Civil Engineering from the University of Patras (1985), and the M.Sc. (1987) and Ph.D. (1989) Degrees from the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he served as Assistant Professor from 1990-1993.His main research interests are focused in the application of advanced structural materials (polymer composites, textile reinforced concrete, lightweight/fibre-reinforced concretes, high-performance concrete, cellular materials, new timber products) in structures, with emphasis in the field of repair/strengthening and seismic retrofitting of concrete, masonry and timber with composites. His secondary research interests are in the area of steel-concrete composite construction.Prof. Triantafillou has authored or co-authored 5 books, 15 book chapters and 110 papers in international scientific Journals and conference proceedings. He is the recipient of four awards: (a) the Best Basic Research Paper Award (2003) from the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction; (b) the Best Research Paper Award (1997) from the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering; (c) the Honorable Mention Applied Research Paper Award (2002) from the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction; and (d) the Fulbright Senior Research Award (1996).Prof. Triantafillou is a member of several International and National Scientific Committees and Societies. He is the convenor of the Working Party EBR (Externally Bonded Reinforcement) of the fib (International Federation for Structural Concrete) Task Group 9.3 and member of the International Editorial Board for the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction.

   

Professor D.J. Oehlers

Professor Oehlers's main research interests are in the partial interaction behaviour in composite steel and concrete beams as well as in the composite behaviour of steel and FRP plated RC structures for which he has been awarded a higher doctorate by the University of Adelaide. He has published two books on composite steel and concrete structures and one book on retrofitting by plating and is currently developing an Australian generic guideline for retrofitting by plating. His research is widely used for the fatigue assessment of composite bridges and more recently for the strengthening of RC structures.

   

Professor Edoardo Cosenza

Professor Cosenza was born in Naples on May 3, 1958. He is the Professor of Construction Technique since 1994. He becomes Head of Department of Structural Analysis and Design, University of Naples Federico II, from 1997 to 2003 and Chairman of Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Naples Federico II, from 2000 to 2002. He is also the Vice-Chairman of the Great Hazards National Commission - Seismical Hazard Section since 2002. Professor Consenza is the author of more than 250 technical-scientifical papers about: concrete structures research and design, steel-concrete composite structures, reinforced concrete structures, seismic engineering, innovative materials in structural engineering and conservative rescue. He is the co-author of many international books. Professor Cosenza has presented lectures in more than 150 seminars and workshops in Italy and abroad. Member of several International Congresses Scientific Boards. Member of ASCE International Editorial Board and FIB's "Structural Concrete" revue. Chairman of Technical-Administrative and Static Testing Commissions for public works. Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the upcoming 2nd International FIB Congress, Naples 2006. Responsible of Research Covenants for the amount of about 7 billions lire during the last five years.

   

Professor C.E. Bakis

Professor Bakis' research interests concern the design, manufacturing, and characterization of polymeric composite materials and structures. In the area of civil engineering structures, his recent activity includes mechanics, durability, multifunctional materials, and experimental methods. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction and he is a Fellow of the ASME.He has been involved in the organization of major conferences related to mechanics and composite materials for organizations such as ASTM, Soc. Engrg. Science, Am. Soc. Composites, and ASME.He is actively involved in ASTM Committee D30 (Composite Materials) and ACI Committee 440 (Fiber Reinforced Polymers), where he chairs subcommittee K on Test Methods.At PennState, Prof. Bakis teaches courses on solid mechanics, composite materials, and experimental stress analysis and he directs the Composites Manufacturing Technology Center.

   

Dr. Amir Mirmiran

Dr. Mirmiran, P.E. is Professor and Chair of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Florida International University. Previously, he was on the faculty at the University of Central Florida (1993-98), University of Cincinnati (1998-2001), and North Carolina State University (2001-2004). He also served as Director of Technical Services for the Constructed Facilities Laboratory and Director of Center for Infrastructure Renewal and Protection at North Carolina State University (2002-2004). Dr. Mirmiran has practiced as professional engineer for over 8 years. His research area is structural engineering with emphasis on high performance concrete and composites. He holds two (2) U.S. patents on advanced composite systems (1997 and 2000). He has published over 60 refereed journal papers and 100 conference papers and technical reports. He has received the National Science Foundation prestigious faculty CAREER award (1996), Florida State University System of Florida Teaching Incentive Award (1996), NASA Technology Transfer Tech Briefs Award (1997), University of Central Florida Presidential Award for Special Merit and National Recognition (1997), University of Cincinnati Honor Roll Professor Award (2000), and University of Cincinnati Young Researcher of the Year Award (2001).

   

Dr. I.E. Harik

Dr. Harik is the Raymond-Blythe Professor of Civil Engineering, and Program Manager of the Structures and Coatings Section at the KentuckyTransportationCenter, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY. His research interests are in the areas of fiber reinforced polymer composite components and structures, seismic analysis and retrofit of bridges, vessel impact on bridges, and homeland security and hazard management of highway structures.He currently serves as a member of eleven societies, and holds offices in four of them.He is a member of the earthquake advisory panel for the Governor of Kentucky.He has authored and co-authored more than 190 technical publications.He has directed the research of more than 30 undergraduate students, 60 graduate students, and 25 visiting professors and scholars.

   

Professor Kiang Hwee Tan

Professor Tan is an associate professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, National University of Singapore.He obtained his doctorate degree from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 1985. He has published more than 140 refereed papers in the field of structural engineering, including a book on "Beams with openings: analysis and design" in 1999. He is a member of the International Editorial/Advisory Board for Cement and Composites (UK), ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction (USA), ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering (USA), ICE Structures & Buildings Journal (UK), JCI Journal of Advanced Concrete Technology (Japan) and Computers & Concrete (Korea).Dr Tan was the organising chairman for the 6th International Symposium on FRP Reinforcement for Concrete Structures (FRPRCS-6), held in Singapore in 2003.He is also the founding president of the FRP Society (Singapore) and a vice-chairman of the International Committee on Concrete Model Code for Asia.Besides being a registered professional engineer, he is also the Honorary Secretary and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Singapore.

   

Dr. Masoud Motavalli

Dr. Motavalli is the Head of the Structural Engineering Research Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Research and Testing, EMPA. He is a Professor at the University of Tehran, Department of Civil Engineering. He obtained his Doctor of Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH-Zurich. His laboratory at EMPA is one of the largest structural engineering laboratories for carrying out large scale structural tests in Europe. His research interests are the application of advanced materials such as multi layered fibre reinforced polymers and shape memory alloys in civil engineering structures, micro and macro mechanical behaviour of these materials, development of smart wireless sensing systems to be integrated in the advanced materials, seismic retrofitting of existing structures with post-tensioned advanced materials and development of vibration mitigation systems using adaptive dampers. He is a council member of IIFC and ISHMII, Member of the ASCE Committee on Performance Based Design and Evaluation, Member of ASCE and SIA.
